Neutrophils Reduce the Parasite Burden in Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis-Infected Macrophages
BACKGROUND Studies on the role of neutrophils in Leishmania infection were mainly performed with L. (L) major, whereas less information is available for L. (L) amazonensis. Previous results from our laboratory showed a large infiltrate of neutrophils in the site of infection in a mouse strain resistant to L. (L.) amazonensis (C3H/HePas). In contrast, the susceptible strain (BALB/c) displayed a ...
متن کاملInteractions with apoptotic but not with necrotic neutrophils increase parasite burden in human macrophages infected with Leishmania amazonensis.
Neutrophils are involved in the initial steps of most responses to pathogens. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the interaction of apoptotic vs. necrotic human neutrophils on macrophage infection by Leishmania amazonensis. Phagocytosis of apoptotic, but not viable, neutrophils by Leishmania-infected macrophages led to an increase in parasite burden via a mechanism dependent on T...
متن کاملExperimental treatment with sodium stibogluconate of hamsters infected with Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi and Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis.
The present paper reports the experimental treatment of hamsters infected with Leishmania chagasi and Leishmania amazonensis with sodium stibogluconate (20 mg/kg/day x 20 days). Only with L. chagasi did the treatment result in the complete elimination of parasites from the spleen. However, no parasitological cure was achieved in hamsters infected with L. amazonensis.

Resistance to and recovery from leishmania infection is dependent on cell-mediated immunity. C57BL/6 mice are resistant to Leishmania amazonensis (La) infection but susceptible to LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus (MuLV) infection. MuLVinfection leads to a state ofimmunodeficiency characterized by severe compromise ofcell-mediated immunity. When infected with La alone, C57BL/6 mice developed a smaU ...
متن کاملSphingolipid Degradation in Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis
BACKGROUND Human leishmaniasis is caused by more than 20 Leishmania species and has a wide range of symptoms. Our recent studies have demonstrated the essential role of sphingolipid degradation in the virulence of Leishmania (Leishmania) major, a species responsible for localized cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Old World. In this study, we investigated the function of sphingolipid degradation in...
